*Special Program* Building an Effective Development Effort: Create a Strategy and Improve Your Operations

The session will focus on two main topics—creating a development strategy and then improving your development operations. The development strategy portion is about making an effective plan for your development efforts--deciding how to leverage limited resources against a variety of development opportunities. During the workshop, participants review where they are at currently with their development efforts, create goals for their development plan, and finally, choose the tactics to accomplish their goals (direct mail, online, major gifts, grants, etc).

The second portion will focus on development operations, specifically about creating an effective and efficient development effort. This includes reviewing or establishing needed policies and procedures, analyzing opportunities to improve donor tracking and information management, and staffing against development work. For staffing, we differentiate tasks that are appropriate for full-time, part-time, consultants, and volunteers respectively.

In this workshop attendees will learn:

  • Learn how to create a streamlined and usable development plan
  • Learn how to make the right decisions on what fundraising tactics to pursue
  • Learn how to create or update the most common and useful development policies
  • Learn how to improve your donor tracking to further customize your messaging

Intended Audience:
Anyone involved in fundraising is encouraged to attend this workshop. The material is ideally suited for small nonprofits that may have limited resources or staffing, and will be applicable to any size of organization.

About the Presenter:

Matt Gayer

Matt Gayer is the Director of Nonprofit Programs at the Catalogue for Philanthropy. In his role, Matt oversees and leads the capacity building and collaboration programs for the 400+ nonprofit partners of the Catalogue. Prior to his work at the Catalogue, Matt worked in leadership development consulting at The Advisory Board Company. Matt also has served as the Executive Director of Health Literacy Dallas, a health communications nonprofit he founded, and worked in higher education. He received his MPA in Nonprofit Management from Syracuse University. In his free time, Matt writes for a local newsletter 730DC, covering local news and events.
